How to Stop Android Apps from Draining Battery in the Background

Why do apps drain battery in the background?

Even when you're not using an app, many of them keep running behind the scenes to sync data, check for notifications, or refresh content. This constant background activity can quietly eat up your battery without you realizing it. So Android gives you built-in tools to check which apps are doing this and restrict them.

Follow the steps below to stop apps from draining battery in the background:

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
  2. Then go to Battery.
  3. Tap on Battery Usage to see the list of apps and how much battery each one is consuming.
  4. Look for apps you don't use often but that are still using a good amount of battery.
  5. Tap on that app from the list.
  6. Here you will find an option called Allow Background Usage or Background Usage Limits. Tap on it.
  7. Select Restricted or turn off the toggle to stop that app from running in the background.
  8. Repeat this for other apps that are unnecessarily draining your battery.
  9. You can also go back to Battery settings and turn on Adaptive Battery. This lets Android automatically learn your usage pattern and limit background activity for apps you rarely use.

Note: Don't restrict background activity for important apps like WhatsApp, Gmail, or your messaging app, or you might miss notifications. Only restrict apps you don't need running in real time, like games or rarely used tools.
